About Galway Speeders
Galway Speeders was founded in September 2011 by a group of parents with the support and guidance of Rena McCarron Rooney, IWA Sport Development Officer.
Galway Speeders is a Sports Club for young people with a physical disability and we cater for children from school age up to young adults.
It is often very difficult for children with a physical disability to participate in mainstream sports and even more difficult to participate in team sports. Through careful selection of our sports, we are able to cater for a wide range of physical disabilities including people who use a wheelchair and those who don't. We have children participating regularly in wheelchair basketball, a table tennis club run by local adult international table tennis players and we have run athletics, kayaking and sailing events. In 2012, we started Karate and Swimming.
Please note that the Galway Speeders is affiliated to IWA-Sport. The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) is a Registered Charity, no. CHY 5393.
Our Aim
Our aims for the coming years are to continue to grow our membership and develop our range of sports in partnership with local and national sporting bodies and clubs. Children with a physical disability in Galway now have the opportunity to compete at sporting events, challenge themselves, meet other children around the country and reach their full potential.
Funding - Donations
Galway Speeders appreciate any donation and assistance for funding as Specialized Sporting equipment is expensive (Track Chairs, Wheelchair Basketball chairs and/or Handcycles).
Please do not hesitate to contact us.
